November 28, 2023 - The Davenport High School volleyball team won the UIL Class 4A state championship on Saturday, Nov. 18, in a come-from-behind victory against the defending state champion, Canyon Randall.
The wolves brought home the school’s first state volleyball title in its 3-2 win in Garland after trailing 2-0 and fighting their way back. Called the “Comeback Pack,” the team ends its season with 47-5 record.
“This season has been a dream,” says Taylour Toso, DHS head volleyball coach. “The girls worked hard and earned every win this season. I’m most proud of the resilience they showed after being down 0-2. When their backs were against the wall, they responded. I am grateful for this year; grateful for this team; and grateful for the community support.”
Senior Talan Dodson was named the championship match MVP, and she along with her sister, junior Ashtan Dodson, and junior Logan Strong were named to the Class 4A State All-Tournament team.
Several players received postseason District 27-4A honors as well. The sisters, Talan and Ashtan were named co-MVPs, making this Talan’s second straight district MVP title, and Ashtan’s first.
Strong was named defensive MVP; senior Emily Chabot was named outstanding setter; junior Emily Williams and sophomore Lexi Dahl were named first-team all-district; senior Ophelia Murphy was named second-team all-district; freshman Dakota Hart, senior Aliyah Montanio and senior Ryan Kovacs received district honorable mentions.
The team is coached by Toso and assistant coaches Carisa Kerwin and Megan McClendon.
